November 29, 2004 - Wolfson Microelectronics Co., Ltd. today announced the latest version of its highly successful WM8718 differential stereo digital-to-analog converter to meet the growing automotive DVD player market. The product is available in a smaller package and features an extended operating temperature range.
The WM8718QFN is available in a small 4x4mm QFN package and is ideal for applications where size is critical. With a signal-to-noise ratio of 111dB ('A' weighted at 48kHz) and -100dB total harmonic distortion, the WM8718QFN's differential output improves audio quality. The left and right zero mark outputs can control the external mute circuit. In particular, the WM8718QFN can operate in the automotive temperature range of -40 to 80 degrees Celsius.
“Deluxe vehicles are increasingly differentiated according to the configured in-vehicle entertainment system. Our new device directly addresses the reliability, performance and size requirements of the automotive industry,†said John Crawford, product manager at Wolfson Microelectronics. "In addition, the product has some key structural features that can improve performance and reduce overall system cost."
These features include Wolfson's unique linearization circuit, which provides leading-edge measurable performance. The WM8718's multi-bit sigma delta system reduces clock jitter sensitivity. Unlike some competing chips, Wolfson's digital-to-analog converter uses a low-value modulator that produces lower high-frequency noise and reduces the required analog output filter components. The PCM data input character length supported by the device is 16 bits to 32 bits at a sampling rate of 192 kHz.
Price and applicability
The WM8718 is now available in volume and is available in a 24-pin QFN package. When the purchase quantity is 10,000 pieces, the price per piece is $1.23. Existing 20-pin SSOP devices will continue to be available with the new version.
