DC power is one of the most important devices for any automated test system. In this type of application, the power supply is required to have high stability, high efficiency, high precision, and easy program control.

In general, DC power supplies in automated test systems have both constant voltage and constant current output modes. Under certain voltage and current parameters, the power supply will operate in constant voltage or constant current mode depending on the load. When the load changes, the power supply can automatically switch between the two output modes. For example, when the voltage set by the power supply is 10V and the current is 10A, when the load is >1Ω, the power supply will remain in the constant voltage output mode of 10V, and the current value is the ratio of voltage to load; when the load is <1Ω, the power supply will remain at 10A constant current output mode, the voltage value is the product of current and load; if the load fluctuates around 1Ω, the power will automatically switch between constant voltage and constant current modes.

The automatic switching function of the DC power supply has a certain flexibility, and can maintain the power supply in the same output mode within a certain load variation range; and can maintain the power supply capability within the range of the power supply capability when the load changes beyond the expected range. However, if the load has a high voltage or current sensitivity, or if it needs to ensure that the power supply operates in a certain mode, this automatic switching function has limitations. For example, when testing laser diodes, it is necessary to ensure that the power supply operates in constant current mode, otherwise the device under test will be damaged.

AMETEK's rack-mounted DC power supply offers a special feature for this – the Foldback feature. That is, when the power output mode is switched, the parameter set according to the foldback function can be immediately turned off or the power output can be turned off after a certain delay. The type of trigger protection can be selected to switch from constant voltage to constant current mode or from constant current to constant voltage mode.

The foldback feature can be set via the DC power front panel. Take the AMETEK Sorensen XG series DC power supply as an example. The front panel function knob can be used to enter the foldback function menu, and then the trigger protection type is CC or CV and the delay time. The delay range is 0.50 seconds to 50 seconds. Of course, you can also cancel the foldback function setting on the front panel.

Another way to set the foldback function parameters is to send SCPI commands over the communication interface. When the power supply enters the trigger protection, the related Pin pin output will be at a high level, which is convenient for the automation system. It should be noted that not all power supplies can be set with the relevant parameters of the foldback on the front panel.
