According to IDC's global personal storage and entry-level storage market tracking report, the global personal and entry-level storage (PELS) market grew by 1.5% in the second quarter of 2014, with shipments reaching 17 million units. The share of hard drive manufacturers in personal and entry-level storage shipments continued to grow, with a year-on-year increase of 3.3% to 77.6%. Shipments of 3.5-inch models decreased 8.5% year-on-year in shipments, and shipments of 2.5-inch models increased by 2.2% year-on-year. In the 3.5-inch personal storage market, 2TB devices accounted for 45.2% of shipments. In the 2.5-inch personal storage market, 1TB devices accounted for 58.2% of the market.

USB continues to be the main interface choice for the personal and entry-level storage market, with shipments increasing by 1.5% year-on-year. Ethernet is still the main interface choice for the entry-level market, accounting for 93.8% of the market. Thunderbolt continues to grow, with shipments growing at a rate of 10%.
