DPS: High temperature polymer fuel cell has a record rate of degradation

According to foreign media reports, Danish Power Systems (DPS) cooperates with and tests at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague (Czech Republic). The report claims that its operating stability (degradation rate) is record-breaking in high-temperature polymer fuel cells (HTPEMFC) tests.

Under constant load conditions, the test history was 9000 hours, the test temperature was 160 ° C, and the degradation rate of the DPS test battery reached 0.5 μV/h, which was equivalent to 0.00008%/h. In contrast, the degradation rate of the reference membrane was as high as 2.6 μV/h. The entire test cycle was 13,000 hours. The team equipped the test cells with polybenzimidazole films and cross-linked and linear polybenzimidazole membranes, and the average voltage decay rate. They are 1.4μV/h and 4.6μV/h, respectively.

DPS mainly produces membrane electrode assembly (MEA) products, and is one of the few manufacturers that can produce polybenzimidazole (PBI) materials, which are used to make plastic membranes for fuel cells. Compared with the traditional PEM fuel cell, the polymer has higher temperature resistance, and its polymer dielectric film (HTPEM) can operate at temperatures of 160-200 °C.

DPS fuel cell stacks use methanol as fuel, methanol production is cheap, and it is less difficult to extract methanol from biological resources. To assemble the fuel cell stack, DPS collaborated with SerEnergy in Aalborg, Denmark, and was funded by the Danish Ministry of Energy's EUDP project. In addition, SerEnergy provides excellent operational stability and very low degradation rates for fuel cell stacks.

In recent years, DPS has been striving to increase the export volume of fuel cell products. The company has achieved success in the manufacture of ultra-high temperature plastics (membranes) for batteries. According to the company's prediction, the technology is very mature and its commercial operation will be close at hand.
