LED Christmas Lights Shine in Hong Kong

Christmas is coming, Hong Kong is preparing a lot of lighting. However, the buildings in Victoria Harbour and Tsim Sha Tsui still use more energy-consuming tungsten bulbs for Christmas decoration. Environmental groups have suggested using LED lighting to save electricity and energy.

In order to welcome Christmas, the buildings on the Victoria Harbour will be decorated with sparkling lights to illuminate the night scene, but the power required for a large number of bulbs is quite amazing. According to a survey conducted by environmental groups, 20 of the 24 buildings with lighting fixtures on both sides of Tsim Sha Tsui and Victoria Harbour were still decorated with tungsten light bulbs for Christmas, which was calculated for more than 6 hours per night and electricity consumption during Christmas. The amount is more than 1.62 million degrees, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 366 four-person households, and the carbon dioxide emissions exceed 1150 tons. The group suggested that the building switched to more energy-efficient LED lights as exterior wall lighting, saving 80% of electricity.

Of course, LED usage has also improved this year. Any of the Tai Po Environmental Protection Projects and Development Managers said that in 2008, similar surveys found that all of the 17 buildings surveyed used tungsten filament bulbs. In 2009, the situation has improved. "There are four buildings that have all switched to LED lights. There are 2 and 3 seats using tungsten light bulbs and LED lights at the same time, reflecting the company's environmental awareness." However, if all buildings are switched to LED lights, the power consumption can be reduced by 1.54 million degrees and the carbon dioxide emissions by 1101 tons. "Although the price of LED lamps is 70% higher than that of tungsten filament lamps, the lifespan is as long as 30,000 hours. With a lifespan of only 2,000 hours, the cost of LED lights is no more expensive than tungsten light bulbs, and it saves power.
