At the "2018 China Optical Network Seminar" held today, Wei Leping, executive deputy director of the Communication Technology Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, director of the China Telecom Science and Technology Committee and chairman of the China Optical Network Symposium, said that 5G competition is evolving into a fiber-optic infrastructure. Competition, fiber infrastructure resources become the main point of 5G differentiated competition.
The 5G service positioning will enable operators to extend from focusing on the wireless access network to the data center where the content is stored, involving the metropolitan area network and the regional network between the RAN and the DC. Wei Leping believes that the optical fiber network between them becomes the key.

In Wei Leping's view, the high speed and high frequency band of 5G require high capacity and fiber connection density of the fiber network, and some services require very low delay. At the same time, the role of 5G fiber optic network will not only be limited to capacity, connection density and delay, but will change the relationship between wireless network and fiber network, and the boundaries will become increasingly blurred. The two will gradually merge into a unified end-to-end network.
"In addition to the connection, 5G fiber network will undergo important changes in its network architecture, function distribution, topology, device form and even transmission medium." Wei Leping believes that 5G competition is evolving into a fiber infrastructure competition. On the one hand, the 5G standard introduces a new cloud network architecture and a new interface, requiring the basic fiber network to support ten times the 4G rate with one-tenth of the 4G delay, and the pressure is huge; on the other hand, 5G is to maintain the network. Economic viability requires fiber optic networks to innovate from architecture to technology to control the growing cost of basic fiber infrastructure.
“Obviously, the way to maximize cost control is to make full use of the existing FTTH fiber infrastructure, including machine room cabinets, pipe holes, poles, ODNs, fiber optic cables, and fiber optics to achieve the sharing of fixed-base resources. Fiber infrastructure resources have become the main point of 5G differentiation competition." Wei Leping said.
