Does Leica Dual Camera Progress: HUAWEI Huawei Mate 9 Smartphone is Simple to Unpack and Compare

I recently decided to upgrade my smartphone after being somewhat dissatisfied with my Nokia 6. Even though it’s made by Foxconn and has solid build quality, lasting six months without crashing, there were a few issues that bothered me. For instance, while the RAM is 4GB, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor felt a bit sluggish, leading to apps freezing or crashing more often than I’d like. The camera performance wasn’t bad, but it didn't live up to the legacy of older Nokia phones. Additionally, the fingerprint sensor was quite small, causing a lower-than-expected recognition rate. Lastly, the native security table system was a mixed bag—while it had its advantages, it came with limitations like no root access and pre-installed apps that couldn’t be uninstalled, which I found annoying. After considering my options, I decided to aim for a device priced above $3000. I wanted something smooth, with great photography capabilities, including optical image stabilization and ideally dual cameras. Battery life was another priority, and I also had a slight preference for Huawei due to their strong technical reputation. While they’ve faced some controversies lately, I still trusted their overall quality. While browsing online, I read an article by Aunt Zhang mentioning that GOME was selling the Huawei Mate9 (4+64GB) for $3099. Excited, I visited the U.S. store over the weekend and confirmed the price. To sweeten the deal, they offered a one-year screen breakage warranty for just $2999, which seemed like a steal compared to other online prices.

Due to purchasing from a physical store, I also found a two-day Amazon promotion where the Huawei Mate9 had a $400 voucher, bringing the price down to $3199. That was another great deal.

Unboxing Experience:

The Mate9 certainly caught attention with its sleek design. It's not overly flashy, but the finish is premium. They even included an adapter, which was a nice touch.

The standout feature is the Leica dual-camera setup. Comparing it with the P9 Plus and Nokia 6, despite having a larger 5.9-inch screen, the Mate9 feels more compact thanks to its high screen-to-body ratio and narrow bezels. The rear design borrows from the P9 Plus but adds a matte finish that blends well with the top and bottom edges. The black version looks particularly cohesive. As for fingerprint placement, I prefer the front sensor for convenience, but the rear sensor is equally reliable. Huawei’s fingerprint unlock is impressively fast.

The headphone jack has been moved to the top, and the bottom now features symmetrical openings, giving it a cleaner aesthetic. Both models come with infrared remote controls.

When comparing the displays, all photos were taken with each phone in eye protection mode. The Mate9 has a slightly lower resolution, but the visual difference is negligible. Below are some examples.

Camera Performance:

Taking a few quick shots at GOME revealed some interesting differences. Laser autofocus and optical image stabilization make the Mate9’s focusing speed incredibly fast. The Nokia 6 lags behind significantly and often results in blurry images. All three devices have camera shortcuts, which is a convenient feature.

In terms of overall quality, the Mate9 stands out the most. The color accuracy and richness in normal mode are unmatched. The Nokia 6 performs decently in macro shots, while the P9 Plus falls short when it comes to doubling the focal length.

Overall, the Mate9 exceeded my expectations in every aspect. If you're looking for a high-end smartphone with excellent photography capabilities and a long-lasting battery, the Mate9 is definitely worth considering.
