OLEDs come to the whales to swallow the new generation lighting market pie

After the market is sizzling hot LEDs for the mainstream technology of the new generation of lighting, everyone seems to gradually forget the OLED. In fact, compared with LED, OLEDs with important advantages such as surface illumination, transparency, lightness and thinness are not only more suitable for lighting applications, but also different from incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and LED lamps. In addition, OLED lighting is more likely to directly promote the large-scale OLED panel, so it attracts more and more manufacturers to enter this market.

DisplaySearch pointed out that the OLED lighting market is expected to take off in 2011; the overall OLED lighting market revenue is expected to surpass the passive matrix OLED display field from 2013 to 2014, and will reach $6 billion in 2018. The industry has accumulated millions of dollars in investment in OLED lighting, especially in Europe, the United States and Japan. Although OLED displays have been introduced into mass production for a decade, OLED lighting components have only recently begun to be sampled and produced in small quantities.

"This is due to the different challenges faced by OLED displays and OLED lighting," said DisplaySearch's display technology director Jennifer Colegrove.

OLED lighting components are characterized by self-illuminating surfaces, ideal for flexible, rollable displays, and even transparent, window-like or mirror-like reflections. OLED lighting components are both thin and rugged, with fast start-up, wide operating temperature range, no noise and environmental protection. In addition, the efficiency of OLED lighting components has also increased significantly in recent years.

"The innovative qualities of OLED lighting are encouraging designers to use more imagination," Colegrove added.

It is understood that major players in the early OLED lighting industry, including Philips, General Electric (GE), Konica Minolta, Lumiotec and Osram, are expected to start production by 2012. The first product to be launched in mass production is expected to come from Philips, followed by companies such as GE and Konica Minolta. DisplaySearch predicts that the OLED lighting market will sprout in 2010 and expand to a market size of approximately $2.838 billion in 2016.
