Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, the latest trends in smart watches

Samsung confirmed that it will release the GalaxyGear smart watch on September 4, but it is clearly not the only competitor in this market. The British "Guardian" website published an article on September 2 stating that from the current media news, major manufacturers including Apple, Google, and Microsoft are planning to develop their own smart watches. So, what's the news about smart watch products from major manufacturers?

1. Apple

Apple iWatch rumors have never stopped. As early as February of this year, Bloomberg and the New York Times reported that Apple is developing products similar to smart watches. In June, Apple applied for the iWatch trademark in many countries, but in the United States and Europe, it failed to come in a hurry and was preempted by other companies. By July, Apple was reported to be hiring heavily for the development of iWatch, and analysts expect Apple to release iWatch in late 2014. In August, Taiwanese media reported that two local companies, Quanta Computer and Inventec, have established a partnership with Apple to produce iWatch and are expected to produce 38 million units in 2014.

2. Samsung

We already know a lot of details about Samsung's smart watch products: it is named GalaxyGear and will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show and Home Appliances Show in Berlin, Germany on September 4. On September 1, the VentureBeat website has released pictures of the prototype GalaxyGear, and called it a "fitness tracker with a camera."

Regarding GalaxyGear, the industry expects it to be a companion to Samsung ’s Galaxy series of smartphones, rather than simply compressing a smartphone into a watch. According to reports, GalaxyGear will use a 2.5-inch 320 & TImes; 320 OLED screen, dual-core processor, with a camera, support NFC and Bluetooth 4.0, and a variety of colors are available.

3. Google

It is reported that in 2012, Google quietly acquired a smart watch company WIMMLabs. The company released its own smart watch WIMMOne in 2011, the company closed in 2012, and "signed an exclusive confidential relationship agreement on technology."

WIMMLabs provided Google with an Android application platform tailored for consumer smart watch products. The smart watch WIMMOne is an Android device that can run independently, and has its own unique applications, not just control applications that can run Android phones.

In October last year, Google applied for a patent for a "smart watch with a flip-up screen". In March this year, the "Financial Times" confirmed that Google is developing a smart watch, led by the Android team. The Wall Street Journal reported in June that Google was developing a game console based on Android while developing smart watches. Reporter AmirEfraTI said that Google will release at least one of two products this fall.

4. Microsoft

This is not the first time Microsoft has tried to develop a smart watch product. In 2004, Microsoft launched a product called SPOT, based on users' subscription to paid services, to send users instant messages from MSN, as well as news, stock market quotes and weather forecasts. However, Microsoft stopped producing this product in 2008 and finally canceled the project last year.

The US "Wall Street Journal" cited supply chain sources as saying in April that the technology giant Microsoft is also developing a smart watch with touch function. According to sources, Microsoft has asked Asian suppliers to supply components for this smart watch, requiring a 1.5-inch display.

In July, TheVerge website reported that Microsoft's smartwatch is currently in the testing stage, equipped with Windows operating system, and will be compatible with all Windows devices.

5. Other

Pebble, which takes the crowdfunding route, is one of the most famous smart watches. Pebble ’s website shows that Pebble ’s sales / reservations so far have reached 85,000. Sony has also launched its second smart watch, SmartWatch2.

High-end smart watch brand HyeTIsCrossbow sold more than 300 units, each priced at 1,200 US dollars (about 7344 yuan). Intel is also testing its smart watch devices.

Consumer electronics manufacturers are eager to try in the smart watch market, and traditional watch manufacturers are no exception. Casio has always been a seat in the digital watch market. In recent years, Casio has also published many smart watches, such as the CasioG-ShockGB6900AA watch with smartphone synchronization and Bluetooth technology.

Will these smart watches look more like a smartphone remote control or a separate device? Will smart watches dominate the fitness tracker market, or will fitness tracker companies add new product lines? These questions are expected to be answered in the coming year.

The ecosystem is not established, smart watches are still in the exploration period

At present, smart watches are still in the exploration stage. Wang Jialiang, CEO of TouchPal Technology, said on Weibo yesterday: Going out wearing such a big and ugly watch, and charging it every day (or every few days), just to make it easier to answer calls or watch SMS , WeChat? In fact, the real use of smart watches should be in the detection of pulse, health indicators and other physical aspects. These are things that mobile phones cannot do, and that is the unique value that smart watches can bring to us. It's as if Google Glass could only be considered a high-end toy before AR (augmented reality) was implemented.

Wei Wuhui, a lecturer at the School of Media Design at Shanghai Jiaotong University, said yesterday that there are still some defects in smart watches, such as being too heavy and too large to carry, and the screen has no curvature. But the most important thing is that the ecosystem around the smart watch is not established. The iOS or Android system of the mobile phone has millions of applications and is supported by a large number of developers to develop in full swing.
