Old driver tips: If you want to fly in the winter, you have to know this! (DOBBY)

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used as power sources for drones, but their performance is significantly affected by temperature changes. The relationship between battery performance and temperature is roughly illustrated in the figure below:

Experienced drone pilots may recall that during cold weather, drone batteries tend to lose power quickly, resulting in shorter flight times. This makes proper winter maintenance of drone batteries especially important. To ensure smooth flights with DOBBY during the winter, here are some essential tips to keep in mind.

Winter Flight Considerations for DOBBY

Before Takeoff

  • Plan your flight route and shooting strategy on the ground before taking off to save time and avoid last-minute adjustments.
  • Recharge the battery before flying to ensure it's at a high voltage level.
  • Store the battery in a close-fitting pocket before flight to protect it from low temperatures that can affect performance.
  • Make sure the battery is above 15°C before use.

During Flight

  • Take off as soon as the system is ready to minimize exposure to cold temperatures.
  • After takeoff, let the drone hover for about 15 seconds so the battery can warm up internally, reducing internal resistance.
  • Avoid long-distance flights and always reserve enough power for the return journey.
  • Monitor the battery level on the screen closely and return immediately if a low voltage warning appears.

Battery Storage and Maintenance

  • Recommended storage temperature: 10°C - 25°C
  • Working environment temperature: 0°C - 45°C. If using in 0°C conditions, heat the battery to at least 15°C before use.
  • Do not leave fully charged batteries for more than 3 days. Long-term full-charge storage reduces battery life. Charge the battery just before use.
  • If not planning to use for an extended period, discharge the battery to 80%-60% before storing. If no professional equipment is available, you can manually monitor the battery level on the screen to achieve this. Repeat this process if stored for over three months.
  • Store the battery in a dry, non-corrosive environment. For long-term storage, place the battery in a sealed bag or explosion-proof box. The ideal temperature is 10-25°C.

These tips can help you enjoy safe and efficient drone flights even in cold weather. Mastering these techniques will allow you to capture amazing shots. Remember, in extremely cold regions, extra precautions are necessary. Have a great flight!
