On January 14, South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics announced the opening of its first washing machine factory in Newberry County, South Carolina. This move is seen as a strategic response to potential U.S. tariffs that could impact its operations. By establishing a local production facility, Samsung aims to reduce the burden of these import duties and strengthen its position in the American market.

The official launch ceremony took place on January 12 in Newberry County, where Samsung celebrated the beginning of its U.S. manufacturing venture. Attendees included Kim Hyun-suk, President of Samsung's Consumer Electronics Division, and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, among other local officials and business leaders.
Over the next three years, Samsung plans to invest $380 million (approximately 2.4 billion yuan) in the new facility. The goal is to produce one million washing machines annually and create over 1,000 jobs in the region. This investment not only supports the local economy but also reflects Samsung’s long-term commitment to the U.S. market.
The decision to build the factory came after the U.S. International Trade Commission recommended in November 2017 that the Trump administration impose additional tariffs on large-scale washing machines imported from South Korea, specifically from Samsung and LG. These imports exceeded the annual quota of 1.2 million units, leading to an extra 50% tariff. This proposal followed a petition by Whirlpool, which holds about 40% of the U.S. washing machine market. Meanwhile, Samsung and LG together hold 30%, and their market share is growing rapidly.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is expected to finalize its trade protection measures in February. In response, the South Korean government has submitted documents to the World Trade Organization (WTO), requesting that the U.S. face annual penalties of at least $710 million (around 4.6 billion yuan). This highlights the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries, with both sides seeking to protect their domestic industries.
