Valve development reduces the cost of Lighthouse base station HTC Vive price cuts just around the corner

VR Daily News The HTC Vive has always been the technology's most prominent advantage in other heads, namely its location tracking technology, which was jointly developed by HTC and Valve. Earlier, Valve planned to open up this technology, and then was blocked by HTC, so open source is still not realized.

As for when to open source? It is estimated that the two companies will have to negotiate. Recently, some media reported that HTC's technology partner Valve is looking for an alternative solution for SteamVR tracking base station, the purpose is to significantly reduce the cost of HTC Vive.

Why is the htc vive head-mounted device expensive? Of course, the reason is definitely because the cost is high. Before the cost dropped significantly, the experience that HTC Vive could provide would not be as widespread as smartphones. In order to reduce the price of htc vive, we can only work on the cost of technology.

A key step in achieving this goal is to reduce the cost of tracking technology. Valve's SteamVR tracking system (Lighthouse) relies on a pair of laser beacon base stations for scanning and tracking. Each base station is equipped with motors, lasers, LEDs and a range of electronic devices. Vive's parts sales page shows that replacing the base station costs $134, so the component may be the most expensive part of the headline, and you need two more.

Valve engineer Ben Jackson presented a cost-reducing solution at Valve's recent Steam Dev Days event. In Jackson's design, a single motor produces a V-shaped laser pattern in the virtual reality (VR) game area while collecting X and Y axis information without the need for additional motors for fine tuning tracking.
