On March 16, 2018, Bosch Sensortec made a notable appearance at the Shanghai Electronics Show in Munich, showcasing their latest 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) tailored for AR and VR applications. The BMI085 IMU is designed to deliver a more immersive and realistic user experience, all while maintaining a compact size. This is achieved through the integration of a 3-axis 16-bit MEMS accelerometer and a 3-axis 16-bit MEMS gyroscope, packed into a small 3mm x 4.5mm x 0.95mm package.
Bosch claims that the BMI085 offers sub-3-millisecond latency, which is crucial for smooth and responsive motion tracking. Additionally, the closed-loop design of both the gyroscope and accelerometer ensures low noise and high stability, making it ideal for demanding AR/VR environments. One of the standout features of the BMI085 is its backward compatibility with the earlier BMI055 model, which significantly eases the transition for developers and engineers already using previous versions.
The primary goal of this new IMU is to address one of the biggest challenges in the VR/AR industry: motion sickness.
