Microsoft submits new patent to double HoloLens field of view

One of the major limitations of the HoloLens has always been its narrow field of view (FOV), which can make augmented reality experiences feel restrictive. However, it seems that Microsoft may be on the verge of a breakthrough. A recently filed patent, submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization in April, outlines a new method for expanding the FOV by splitting the image and projecting it through two separate components before recombining them.

The patent was developed by Microsoft optical engineers Tuomas Vallius and Jani Tervo. According to their design, even if the central component only supports a 35-degree field of view, the system can ultimately achieve at least 70 degrees by combining the outputs of multiple components. This approach could significantly enhance the user experience by making the AR display feel more immersive and natural.

According to the patent description, the system uses intermediate components to expand the effective field of view. It suggests that with this method, users could potentially see more than 70 degrees, and in some cases, even up to 90 degrees or more. This is achieved by directing different parts of the visual field to separate components, which allows for greater flexibility in how the image is rendered.

Another benefit of this technology is energy efficiency. By splitting the field of view and only sending portions of the image to specific components, the system can reduce power consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional methods. This could lead to longer battery life and better performance in future HoloLens models.

While patents don’t guarantee that a feature will be implemented, this development is a strong indicator that Microsoft is actively working on improving the HoloLens. If this technology makes its way into the next generation of devices, it could mark a significant step forward in the evolution of mixed reality headsets. For now, it’s an exciting sign that the future of HoloLens might offer a much wider and more comfortable viewing experience.
