As the core component of electric vehicles, power batteries are central to this transformation. Thanks to supportive policies and collaborative efforts, China's power battery industry has made significant progress. But what does the future hold for these essential components?
The scale of power battery production is expanding rapidly. It is expected that the production and sales of domestic new energy vehicles will continue to grow at a compound annual rate exceeding 30% over the next five years. This surge in demand has directly fueled the expansion of the power battery market.
According to the "China Power Battery PACK Industry Development Forecast and Investment Analysis Report" from Prospective Industry Research Institute, China’s power battery output value reached 38 billion yuan in 2015, marking a year-on-year increase of 262%. By 2016, it had grown to 64.5 billion yuan, surpassing traditional digital lithium batteries for the first time and becoming the largest segment in the lithium battery market.
As new policies are introduced and advancements in lithium battery technology reduce costs, demand for power batteries is expected to rise sharply. In 2016, China produced 30.8 GWh of automotive power batteries, and by 2020, this is projected to reach 141 GWh.
Currently, the domestic power battery industry is entering a new phase of development, but challenges remain in terms of industrial structure, manufacturing processes, and technological innovation. Additionally, the rapid advancement of international vehicle and battery technologies poses significant pressure on China's position in the global market.
For power battery companies, the issue of overcapacity is becoming increasingly apparent. While the transition to ternary batteries and higher energy density is inevitable, the pace of this shift may slow down in 2018. To adapt, the following strategies are recommended:
